Kīpahulu Valley, Haleakalā National Park, Maui bird, mosquito, and avian malaria infection data, 2002 and 2019
This data publication contains data files collected as part of a field and laboratory effort aimed at estimating the prevalence and altitudinal distribution of avian malaria in forest birds and in the primary vector of malaria in Hawaii, Culex quinquefasciatus in Kīpahulu Valley, Haleakalā National Park, on the island of Maui in 2002 and 2019. To track the spread of mosquitoes and increased malaria risk to forest birds into higher elevations, mosquito and bird data were collected in 2002 at eight sites ranging 0 to 1,550 m above sea level (asl) and in 2019 at seven sites ranging 0 to 2,000 m asl. This data publication consists of 1) spatial coordinate data, 2) bird capture data and infection data in birds, 3) mosquito capture data, 4) mosquito dissection and infection data, 5) terrestrial larval habitat data collected in 2002, 6) stream survey data collected in 2002 and 2019, and 7) terrestrial larval habitat data collected in 2019. Site coordinate data consists of GPS spatial location data of camps, sampling points where mosquitoes and birds were captured, and locations of terrestrial and stream larval habitat surveys. Mosquito capture data includes identification and counts of mosquitoes captured in adult mosquito traps. Mosquito dissection and infection data comprises data from a subset of captured mosquitoes that were dissected and malaria infection determined by microscopic examination of mosquito midguts and salivary glands, as well as qPCR results for a subset of captured mosquitoes. Bird capture and infection data comprises morphometric data, age, sex, and molt status of native and non-native forest birds that were captured with mist nets. These data include avian malaria diagnostic results using microscopy, serological assays, and qPCR of blood samples from captured birds. Terrestrial and stream survey data consist of larval habitat availability and mosquito larvae data collected along terrestrial transects and from within streams.
