Due to a lapse in appropriations, the majority of USGS websites may not be up to date and may not reflect current conditions. Websites displaying real-time data, such as Earthquake, Volcano, LANDSAT and Water information needed for public health and safety will be updated with limited support. Additionally, USGS will not be able to respond to inquiries until appropriations are enacted. For more information, please see www.doi.gov/shutdown.
The Kīlauea summit eruption that began on Sunday, September 10, 2023 continues; this map depicts lava flow activity as of September 14, the fourth full day of the eruption. Lava is erupting from multiple fissures on the eastern down-dropped block from the 2018 caldera collapse, having inundated both the block itself and sections of the western floor of Halema‘uma‘u crater. The western floor was built during the previous four eruptions in Halema‘uma‘u dating back to 2020, with the extent of lava from the June 2023 eruption marked in purple. Approximately 496 acres (201 hectares) have been covered with new lava since Sunday, with active flows still covering approximately 108 acres (44 hectares).
