John Earnest Weaver. Patterns from the World Underneath: The Ecological Relations of Roots (1919) includes detailed drawings of prairie plants and their extensive root systems. The drawings were made from photographs or at the same time as the root was excavated, provided precise measurements of root depth. Figure 7.
