Title: Climate change and the global redistribution of biodiversity: are expected range shifts supported by the evidence?
Speaker: Sarah Weiskopf, Ph.D., Research Ecologist, National Climate Adaptation Science Center
Date: Friday, July 11, 2:00-2:30 pm Eastern/11:00 -11:30 am Pacific
Summary
One of the most widely anticipated impacts of climate change on biodiversity is the geographic shift in species distributions as they move to track their climate niches. However, the directions and rates of distribution shifts are highly variable across species, systems, and studies, complicating efforts to manage and anticipate responses. In this presentation, we will review the evidence of observed species range shifts and compare them to modeled predictions. We will also examine how factors such as climate exposure and species traits influence the diversity of species responses.
