Matthew Moser

Matt Moser is a Physical Scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Central Plains Water Science Center, based in the Lincoln, Nebraska office. The Center serves both Nebraska and Kansas. Matt specializes in discrete surface-water quality sampling and continuous water-quali

Matt is a Physical Scientist specializing in water quality across Nebraska. He has worked with water resources since joining the USGS in 2006 and has over 20 years of experience operating and maintaining water quality sensors. His expertise includes troubleshooting equipment and ensuring accurate, high-quality data collection.

Matt leads Nebraska’s continuous water-quality monitoring network, which uses multi-parameter sondes to measure conditions in surface water. He designs monitoring stations to optimize data quality and oversees data approval for the network. Continuous monitoring includes parameters such as nitrate, turbidity, water temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and total algae.

In addition to continuous monitoring, Matt leads sampling crews that collect data on a wide range of analytes, including nutrients, major ions, bacteria, eDNA, pesticides, neonicotinoids, and sediment. While his primary focus is surface water, he also has experience sampling groundwater. Surface water sites are accessed by wading, from bridges, or by boat.
