Shoreline Retreat Corpus Christi, Texas

Detailed Description

On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey struck the Gulf Coast of Texas as a Category 4 hurricane. The hurricane’s eye made landfall about 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi, delivering a direct hit to Rockport and Fulton.

Compare this Landsat 8 image acquired on August 19, 2017, with the Landsat 7 image acquired on September 12 to see changes to the coastline, still visible 18 days after the storm hit.

This area was spared the extreme rainfall of Houston and other nearby regions. But in Corpus Christi and other communities to the north, winds gusting to 130 miles per hour were the main source of damage to residences and businesses. Shoreline retreat caused by storm surge is evident on barrier islands in these Landsat images.
