An aerial view of the Awatixa Village along the Knife River
Detailed Description
An aerial view of Awatixa Village, built by the Awatixa Hidatsa on the banks of the Knife River. The village was occupied from c.1790-1834, though today only the depressions of the earthlodges that once stood here remain. This is one of the most threatened of the Knife River Indian Villages – the river has already eroded away two-thirds of the village. Park managers are concerned that erosion could become more severe should climate change result in increased flooding.
