Asymmetric cone of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō reaches maximum height of 255 m above ...
Detailed Description
View of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō erupting during episode 47 in June 1986, the last of the high lava-fountaining episodes. This view from the north shows the asymmetric shape of the cone. The prevailing trade winds blow from the northeast (from the left-hand side of photo), so that much of the fallout from the series of high lava fountains landed on the downwind (right) side of the conduit and built a steep cone.
