Colletes productus, f, back, Caroline Co., VA

Detailed Description

Colletes productus - Lover of Lyonia. Lyonia = obscure shrub aka fetterbush/staggerbush/maleberry. There are a lot of obscure relationships out there. Here is a specialist bee dependent on an reasonably lovely ericaceous shrub. No Lyonia no C. productus and several other bees. Who speaks for Lyonia though? Can we plant our way back to native bee health. As an ancillary activity yes, as a complete solution no. We need all those pockets of natural areas and biodiversity where nature provides the complexity we can only create as a shadow of Nature's millions of years of labor. Collected by Ellison Orcutt from the Commonwealth of Virginia found on Forth A.P. Hill. Photography Information: Canon Mark II 5D, Zerene Stacker, Stackshot Sled, 65mm Canon MP-E 1-5X macro lens, Twin Macro Flash in Styrofoam Cooler, F5.0, ISO 100, Shutter Speed 200 USGSBIML Photoshopping Technique: Note that we now have added using the burn tool at 50% opacity set to shadows to clean up the halos that bleed into the black background from "hot" color sections of the picture.
