In this west shore view of Guguan (Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands) on May 21, 2006, cinder cones and lava flows are visible. The photo was taken as scientists and volunteers from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory returned from site visits on Pagan (located approximately 50 miles north of Guguan). The last known volcanic eruption on Guguan was some time between 1882 and 1884. Local collaboration with the Saipan Emergency Management Office made the multi-day field campaign possible.
