Kīlauea summit eruption within Halema‘uma‘u—January 6, 2022
Detailed Description
The Kīlauea summit eruption, within Halema‘uma‘u crater, has entered another pause. Yesterday afternoon, January 6, deflation and a decrease in volcanic tremor started at the summit, signaling that the eruption was likely entering a pause. This telephoto image, taken about one hour before deflation started, shows large sheets of solidified lava crust forming and separating above the active embayment, north of the west vent. The crust was then rafted to the north margin of the lava lake (out of view in the upper left). USGS photo by C. Parcheta.
