Landsat 8 Image of the Salt Dome Islands of Louisiana

Detailed Description
Louisiana is home to numerous salt domes, including the five distinct coastal salt dome islands that can be found in the southern part of the state near the Gulf of Mexico. Formed by the upward pressure of ancient salt deposits, these hills rise above the surrounding marshes and coastal plains of Louisiana. The five islands from northwest to southeast are Jefferson Island, Avery Island, Weeks Island, Cote Blanch Island, and Belle Isle.
Avery Island, historically known as Petit Anse, rises to a height of 163 feet (50 meters) above sea level, making it the highest point on the entire Gulf Coast. Located in the Iberia Parish, just inland from Vermilion Bay, Avery Island has a long history of salt mining and sugarcane production. Yet, today, it is best known as the birthplace of Tabasco sauce. In 1868, Edmund McIlhenny planted his first pepper crop, and using salt from the mine and a little vinegar, he created the world-famous hot sauce recipe that is still used today.
