Lasioglossum georgeckworti, F, Face, NY, Queens

Detailed Description

A dune specialist. You won't find this species anywhere except in the dunes immediately along the ocean. As such it is a poster child for vulnerability to coastal sea level change and global climate change. Where will all the many species of plants, insects, and animals go that only exists on dunelands if the dunes cannot reform to the interior as the ocean's rise? This one was found in Queens NYC (yep, there are still dunes to be found in New York City) in Gateway National Recreation Area. Photo by Brooke Alexander. Photography Information: Canon Mark II 5D, Zerene Stacker, Stackshot Sled, 65mm Canon MP-E 1-5X macro lens, Twin Macro Flash in Styrofoam Cooler, F5.0, ISO 100, Shutter Speed 200. USGSBIML Photoshopping Technique: Note that we now have added using the burn tool at 50% opacity set to shadows to clean up the halos that bleed into the black background from "hot" color sections of the picture.
