Marbled salamander smiling
Detailed Description
Marbled salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) are one of a few ambystomids found within the northeast region and we encounter them occasionally under rotting logs during wetland surveys. These salamanders are unique in that they lay eggs in the fall, well before a typical spring-time breeding season. This early breeding behavior allows hatched larvae to get a head start before other amphibians have even laid eggs.
