Martinapis luteicornis, f, side, Cochise Co. AZ

Detailed Description

An obscure bee of the desert, Martinapis luteicornis only is active early in the morning just as the sky begins to lighten. At least one paper indicates that they are specialists on Psorothamnus scoparius or the Broom Dalea. Since records for the species seem to appear outside the known range of the plant (or the genus of the plant) things are, as usual, more complicated. Photograph by Amanda Robinson. I think the specimen was collected by Don Harvey Photography Information: Canon Mark II 5D, Zerene Stacker, Stackshot Sled, 65mm Canon MP-E 1-5X macro lens, Twin Macro Flash in Styrofoam Cooler, F5.0, ISO 100, Shutter Speed 200. USGSBIML Photoshopping Technique: Note that we now have added using the burn tool at 50% opacity set to shadows to clean up the halos that bleed into the black background from "hot" color sections of the picture.
