Nomada fragariae, F, Back, MD, PG County

Detailed Description

Nomada fragariae - A rare cleptoparasite, almost certainly of Andrena...but which species. There are very few records of this species, and only in the last few years has the female been described. In most collections the Nomada sit at the end in a mosh pit waiting for someone to identify them...a tricky group. This one was caught right across the street from my lab cruising around a patch of bluets...it was not clear what the host bee was as all the Andrena captured were small and this is a big bee....so would have a big host. hmmmmm. Photography Information: Canon Mark II 5D, Zerene Stacker, Stackshot Sled, 65mm Canon MP-E 1-5X macro lens, Twin Macro Flash in Styrofoam Cooler, F5.0, ISO 100, Shutter Speed 200. USGSBIML Photoshopping Technique: Note that we now have added using the burn tool at 50% opacity set to shadows to clean up the halos that bleed into the black background from "hot" color sections of the picture.
