Oso Landslide, Washinton
Detailed Description
On March 22, 2014, the Oso landslide in Washington State, seen in the aerial photograph above left, sent 18 million tons of sediment racing downhill at speeds averaging 64 kilometers (40 miles) per hour before stopping 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) away. It claimed 43 lives and 35 homes, covered a highway, and dammed a river. Economic losses exceeded $150 million.
