Recharge from Leaky Infrastructure on Long Island, New York: The figure above shows the areal extent of returnflow from leaky infrastructure on Long Island, NY. An additional source of water to the Long Island aquifer system is the return of water from leaky water and sewer lines.  It is assumed that in areas with older infrastructure, leakage along these distribution lines can be as much as 10 percent of the total water moving through them.
