Detailed Description
A view from the skiff (small boat) looking to the Research Vessel Solstice with the purse seine net deployed off the stern. The smaller skiff works with the Solstice to circle the large net around the school of Pacific Herring in Prince William Sound Alaska. The boats work together in darkness until the fish are enclosed, as the deck lights will scare away the school. RV Solstice is owned and operated by Alaska Department of Fish and Game; this photo was taken during a joint collection effort with the U.S. Geological Survey to sample fish for an annual disease survey in the sound.
