September 8, 2026 — Panorama of Judds Crater on Ta‘ū Island, American Samoa

This panorama photo shows the heavily vegetated Judds Crater from the north looking south on eastern Ta‘ū Island in American Samoa. Although the crater is at over 1,000 feet (300 meters) elevation, its morphology suggests that formed through phreatomagmatic volcanic activity, caused when rising magma interacts with groundwater (or nearshore environments), causing a series of explosions. The crater is over 1,000 feet across, and the cliffs in the distance are the southern side of the crater. USGS photo by N. Deligne.
