USFS/Caltrans Bridge for Vehicle, Amphibian Crossings
Detailed Description
The U.S. Forest Service and Caltrans worked together to contract out for a bridge on this section of a forest road. The area is home to the rare Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus canorus), which is vulnerable to being struck by vehicles as it crosses the road from one habitat to another. USGS scientists are leading studies to determine whether the clear space below the elevated bridge will protect Yosemite toads from vehicle strikes. Mesh fencing on either side of the road discourages the toads from crossing at an unprotected point away from the bridge.
