The top left image shows a map of State and Federal Superfund point-source contamination sites; the bottom left image shows a map of where wastewater returnflow is a concern; and the top right image shows the distribution of public-supply wells on Long Island. Determining the source of water to a pumping well becomes more complicated when there are multiple pumping wells and sources of potential contamination, particularly nonpoint sources of contamination, such as wastewater returned to the aquifer from domestic-septic systems.
