Judy Fierstein, versatile field geologist in USGS volcano studies for 40 years, is the 2019 recipient of the Florence Bascom Geologic Mapping Award of the Geological Society of America. Judy has mapped numerous volcanic areas in Alaska, Chile, Argentina, Washington, Oregon, and California. Shown here on 18 July 2019, she is on granitic terrain in the central Sierra Nevada, with the great San Joaquin River canyons in the background and Mammoth Mountain volcano on the skyline.
