Seismic and atmospheric acoustic waves reveal the dynamics of a large rock–ice avalanche in Denali National Park
Detailed Description
In September 2023, a large rock-ice avalanche happened in Denali National Park at Peters Dome, just 12 km from the top of Denali. This landslide was well-recorded by Alaska's robust geophysical sensor network, and it was observed by park staff, who flew over the area the next day. In this talk, I will explain how seismology and infrasound (low-frequency sound waves in the air) are used to monitor landslides. I’ll highlight the Denali event to show the useful information we can quickly collect from these measurements. Finally, I will discuss how these tools can help with future landslide responses and monitoring.
