Detailed Description

This is an animation showing the changing conditions relative to the historic record of USGS streamgages from April 1, 2025 to June 30, 2025. The river conditions shown range from the driest condition seen at a gage (red open circles) to the wettest (blue closed circles). A purple outer ring around a gage indicates it is flooding.

In early April, dry conditions were already apparent in the desert Southwest and Florida peninsula. These drought conditions persisted and intensified through the end of June, especially for states such as Arizona, New Mexico, and Florida. Concurrently, widespread flooding occurred in the Ohio Valley down to the Lower Mississippi Valley in states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi.

In late April through the end of June, flooding became more frequent in the South-Central U.S., including areas of Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

In early May, flooding conditions spread across parts of the East, with elevated flows continuing through late June for states such as New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Note that both USGS gage height and National Weather Service flood stage are necessary to determine flooding conditions. The combination was available for 80% of streamgages at the time this graphic was produced. Only publicly available data from Water Data for the Nation were used (https://waterdata.usgs.gov/).
