U.S. River Conditions, July to September 2025
Detailed Description
This is an animation showing the changing conditions relative to the historic record of USGS streamgages from July 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025. The river conditions shown range from the driest condition seen at a gage (red open circles) to the wettest (blue closed circles). A purple outer ring around a gage indicates it is flooding.
At the start of July, flooding conditions affected the upper Midwest, while drought conditions were widespread across parts of the West and Hawaii. Through mid-July, severe flooding developed in central Texas, and Tropical Storm Chantal brought additional wet conditions to portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Later in the quarter, low flow conditions persisted across New England, while high flows again appeared in parts of the upper Midwest. By August, flooding developed in parts of the Southeast, while drought conditions expanded into the Ohio Valley in September.
Note that both USGS gage height and National Weather Service flood stage are necessary to determine flooding conditions. The combination was available for 80% of streamgages at the time this graphic was produced. Only publicly available data from Water Data for the Nation were used (https://waterdata.usgs.gov/).
