U.S. River Conditions, October to December 2025
Detailed Description
October to December 2025
This is an animation showing the changing conditions relative to the historic record of USGS streamgages from October 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025. The river conditions shown range from the driest condition seen at a gage (red open circles) to the wettest (blue closed circles). A purple outer ring around a gage indicates it is flooding.
At the start of October, drought conditions affected parts of the Western U.S. and much of New England. Concurrently, wet conditions developed in northeast Florida and persisted until the end of the month.
In November, atmospheric river events led to high water and flooding in the Pacific Northwest. In the middle of the month, parts of the Southwest experienced high water. By December, additional atmospheric river events further impacted the Pacific Northwest and also hit California, causing high water and flooding that extended into the end of the year.
Note that both USGS gage height and National Weather Service flood stage are necessary to determine flooding conditions. The combination was available for 80% of streamgages at the time this graphic was produced. Only publicly available data from Water Data for the Nation were used (https://waterdata.usgs.gov/).
