Research Ecologist Dawn Dittman (GLSC, Cortland, New York) participated as a partner in this year’s release of hatchery reared lake sturgeon on October 10, 2018, by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and US Fish and Wildlife Service in several Lake Ontario, St. Lawrence River, and Finger Lakes tributaries. The work is in support of the Lake Sturgeon Recovery Plan 2018-2024. Dawn, Marc Chalupnicki, Caleb Konrad, and Candace Schermerhorn (GLSC, Cortland, New York) and volunteers from the Cayuga Nature Center, Seneca Park Zoo, and local high school class, weighed, measured and tagged a proportion of the fish to aid in long-term studies of survival, habitat use, and population recovery. The stocking effort is captured in a NYup.com article, “DEC stocking thousands of threatened lake sturgeon in NY waters this month,” October 16, 2018.
