Extensometer Drilling in Virginia

Deep drilling in eastern Virginia will evaluate past effects of groundwater pumping, land subsidence, and relative sea-level rise. Future injection of water is expected to add pressure, expand the aquifer, and raise the land surface.

Along the Atlantic Coast, a 2000+ ft deep hole has been drilled by the USGS to assess the issues of groundwater pumping, relative sea-level rise, and land subsidence. This is the first installation of an extensometer to measure land subsidence in the North Atlantic Coastal Plain in over 30 years. Click here to learn more.
