The Powell 150 Expedition and the Legacy of John Wesley Powell

Following his much-heralded expedition down the Colorado River in 1869, John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was instrumental in the creation of the U.S. Geological Survey and a strong proponent of federal leadership in science. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1869 expedition, the USGS last summer participated in a 70-day reenactment of the famous river journey known as Powell 150. This talk will touch on some of Powell’s major accomplishments and present highlights from the fourth leg of the expedition, in which the speakers participated.
