New Streamgage Installed on the Santuit River, Barnstable, MA
The Santuit River is an important natural resource for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the towns of Mashpee and Barnstable on Cape Cod. The river's source is Santuit Pond, which is a eutrophic kettle pond subject to frequent algal blooms that affect the downstream water quality of the river. On several recent occasions, severe blooms have turned the river emerald green. The Santuit River is one of 12 Cape Cod streams being monitored by the USGS New England Water Science Center and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 1 for water-quality degradation caused by wastewater disposal to groundwater from septic systems.
