Each year, the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC) holds the Blue Pencil & Gold Screen Awards Competition, an international awards program that recognizes superior government communication products and those who produce them. It is open to federal, tribal, military, state, regional, county, municipal, and all other government entities.
During the virtual awards ceremony on May 26, 2021, it was announced that the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center—2019 Annual Report, Circular 1467 won first place in the Annual Report category! The judges commented, “your photos are amazing”, “this is an absolutely beautiful piece”, and “well thought out beautiful design.”
The 2019 annual report highlights accomplishments of 2019, includes a list of 2019 publications, and summarizes the work of the center, as well as the work of each of its science groups. This product allows readers to gain a general understanding of the focus areas of the center’s scientific research and learn more about specific projects and progress made throughout 2019, all while enjoying interesting photographs taken in various environments and laboratories, and applicable maps and figures.
Our center strives to create accessible, broadly available, and visually appealing annual reports each year. Our goal is to inform readers, especially USGS leadership, of our collective value and productivity by explaining our center’s research areas, describing the purpose and value of various projects, and highlighting project progress and specific accomplishments. The design invites readers to flip through and learn, through vivid images and in plain language, about the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center’s (WHCMSC’s) current research and recent accomplishments, how the Nation benefits from our research and products, and where potential partners could work with us.
The annual report, Circular 1467, was authored by WHCMSC Information Specialist Sara Ernst and the technical edit, layout, and printing was conducted by the USGS Science Publishing Network’s Jonas Casey-Williams, Susan Meacham, and Cathy Knutson, respectively.
The team is honored to be recognized for creating a successful product.
