At the end of 18 weeks during spring and summer in 1986 and 1987, survival was 0.5339 and 0.3709 respectively. Repeated organophosphorus insecticide sprays to crops in 1987 may have significantly reduced survival of bobwhites beyond that seen in 1986 when few pesticides were applied. Cropland use was high; birds were found less than 50% of the time in or less than 100 meters of field edges, thereby increasing their risk of exposure to toxic pesticides.
