Since its formation in 1879, the U.S. Geological Survey has been collecting samples and specimens during the course of fieldwork and scientific investigations. Scientific collections of samples and associated metadata are the foundation for USGS analytical research and must be managed responsibly in order to ensure the integrity of future research, as well as the reproducibility of past science.
