toetally: a Shiny application for designing, tracking, and managing individual marking schemas in capture-mark-recapture studies
October 30, 2026
toetally is a Shiny application designed to assist wildlife researchers with generating and managing individual marking schemas for capture-mark-recapture studies. The app helps researchers: 1) Generate complete marking schemas based on user-defined coding rules, 2) Identify available marking IDs for future use based on historical capture records, and 3) Perform quality assurance checks on marking and capture datasets. toetally is designed to improve consistency in marking workflows, reduce manual calculations, and support transparent data management for long-term wildlife monitoring projects. toetally is also available online at: https://rconnect.chs.usgs.gov/toetally/
