Lauren Palermo
I am a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey Landslide Hazards Program. My work focuses on improving the United States landslide loss information through development of the National Landslide Damage and Loss Database (NLDL).
In this role, I compile, standardize, and analyze information on landslide damages, costs, injuries, and fatalities across the United States, helping make landslide loss data more consistent, accessible, and usable in support of hazard science, risk reduction, and decision-making. I also co-lead the Landslide Loss Interest Group (LLIG), which brings together federal, state, and academic partners to advance landslide loss tracking. As part of the LASER project, I support communications during major landslide events, such as the 2024 Hurricane Helene response.
I work closely with partners across USGS and other agencies to improve how landslide impacts are documented. This work supports the goals of the USGS National Landslide Hazards Reduction Program and the National Strategy for Landslide Loss Reduction by helping build a more complete, standardized picture of landslide consequences nationwide. I also enjoy sharing hazard science outside the agency and occasionally work with Denver Public Schools to teach students about earthquakes, landslides, and other natural hazards through hands-on activities.
