Richard has been the Assistant Curator at the NSF-Ice Core Facility since 2010 overseeing the worlds largest collection of meteoric ice cores from the polar regions.
Richard has overseen the processing and distribution of thousands of meters of ice cores over the course of his career. Managing the largest collection of ice cores in the world and working with US scientists as well as international colleagues, he has provided world class service to researches, grad students, and provided public outreach to inform people about the importance of ice core research.
He also spent two seasons on the Greenland Ice Sheet as part of an international effort led by the University of Copenhagen to drill a nearly 2 mile ice core at the East Greenland Ice Sheet Project site. In 2026, the entire collection of ice cores will be transferred to a brand new state of the art facility to help preserve this collection for the next 30 years.
Started with the USGS as an intern at the Core Research Center in 2007 before moving to the NSF Ice Core Facility in 2010
