Tom Sohre, FAC-P/PM; PMP

Tom Sohre is the Acting Director of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center, part of the Core Science Systems Mission Area.

Mr. Sohre guides the Center’s mission to deliver authoritative Earth observation data and science that support land change monitoring, disaster response, and sustainable resource management across the Nation and around the globe. His leadership spans Landsat mission operations, science initiatives that leverage satellite data to track change, and strategic planning for future satellite architectures. He also oversees efforts to ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of moderate-resolution remotely sensed data and leads data center modernization and consolidation initiatives. Tom oversees an annual operating budget of approximately $95 million and a workforce of more than 600 federal and contractor personnel.

With over 30 years of experience in information technology, systems engineering, and data center operations, Tom has held key leadership roles at EROS, including Project Manager for the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC), Manager of the Land Satellites Data Systems (LSDS), Center IT Team Manager, and Branch Chief for Data Center and Systems. His expertise spans enterprise architecture, acquisition and program management, risk management, and operational excellence for 24/7 systems.

Tom’s collaboration portfolio includes work with NASA and NOAA and contributions to international coordination through the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS). He has served as Chair/Vice-Chair of CEOS WGISS, participated in NASA Earth Science data system reviews, and served on NOAA’s NCCF Independent Review Board. Within USGS, he has engaged in leadership development as a Leadership Intensives trainer and supported bureau-wide governance efforts (FITARA, IMTGC).
