Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are a chemical class consisting of almost 15,000 man-made substances that are widespread in the environment and can break down slowly. These compounds were invented in the mid-1900s to help make products stain- and heat-resistant and have been incorporated into many household and industrial products.
