John Wesley Powell was a Civil War vetern, educator, and geologist who helped found the USGS and served as its second director, among many other posts at various institutions. To mark the 150th anniversary of the 1869 Powell geographic expedition of ~1000 miles of the Green and Colorado rivers, you can print out your own Paper Powell mascot and take him on adventure with you! We'd love to see where he goes, please tag us @USGS_YES on social media and use the hashtag #paperpowell. Naturally, we won't be able to see any private Instagram/FB accounts.

Paper Powell was inspired by, and in coordination with, the John Wesley Powell River History Museum in Green River, Utah. Their Paper Powell has traveled down the Green and Colorado rivers for many years and will continue to inspire kids and families for years to come.

Have fun exploring! We hope you take the opportunity to learn about current USGS science along the way.
