Alaska Science Center Newsletter – 2024 Yearly Review
In this issue, we feature highlights from the year. Our research areas include ecosystems, minerals, geology, landscape science, natural hazards, and water. Science is conducted to inform the public and decision-makers through assessments of natural resources and hazards. Below are a few examples and other ways to learn about USGS science in Alaska.
The Rusting of Arctic Rivers: Freshwater Ecosystems Respond to Rapidly Uptaking Metals
The water quality of streams and rivers in the Arctic is sensitive to rapid climate change and altered disturbance regimes.
The 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake Anchorage Walking Tour
On March 27, 1964 at 5:36 p.m. local time an earthquake of magnitude 9.2 occurred in the Prince William Sound region of Alaska, approximately 15.5 miles (25 km) beneath the surface. Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, located west of the fault rupture, sustained heavy property damage.
USGS Alaska Q&A Series
USGS scientists and collaborators talk about their work in Alaska through a series of Questions and Answers (Q&As). The links below contain interviews, photos, and other information about the work and collaborations of the USGS Alaska Science Center.

USGS Transboundary River Monitoring in Southeast Alaska
The USGS Alaska Science Center operates super gages on the Alsek, Taku, Stikine, Unuk and Salmon Rivers. Discrete water quality, sediment, and biological sampling are also collected at each gage location. Discrete water quality samples are also collected annually at the Canada-Alaska border crossings of the Taku, Stikine, and Unuk Rivers. Water quality data collection began in 2018 on the Unuk...
Mechanisms by Which Heatwaves Impact Seabirds and Marine Ecosystems
Heatwaves are in the news a lot lately and their impacts have been felt by people across the world. Extreme heat is also impacting wildlife and marine ecosystems in recent years. These heatwaves are increasing in frequency and magnitude worldwide.
Alaska Forage Fish Database
The Alaska Forage Fish Database is a consolidation of survey catch data and predator diets from multiple partners including USGS Alaska Science Center, NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service Alaska Fisheries Science Center, USFWS Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and others. The spatial coverage of the database encompasses the coastal and offshore...
Alaska Mine Waste
Critical minerals are essential to the U.S. economy and national security, have a supply chain that is vulnerable to disruption, and serve an essential function in the manufacturing of many products. Often, critical minerals are found as co- or by-products in deposits mined for precious or base metals.
Alaska Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI)
Our objective is to provide a strategic framework for planning, coordination, and execution of the USGS Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) in Alaska. Earth MRI aims to improve knowledge of the U.S. geologic framework through new geological and geophysical mapping and to identify areas that have the potential to contain undiscovered critical mineral resources.
Alaska Petroleum Systems
The Alaska Petroleum Systems project has three main objectives:(A) conduct research that increases our understanding of Alaska petroleum systems,(B) conduct assessments of undiscovered oil and gas resources, and(C) deliver energy-resource information to land and resource managers, policy makers, and the public.
Celebrating Black History: Meet Ric Wilson, A Pioneer of Alaskan Geo-Mapping
Growing up beneath the towering steel structures of Chicago, Ric Wilson was fascinated with how things worked.
September is National Preparedness Month
The U.S. Geological Survey provides critical information to help protect communities from the natural hazards that occur every day. As the preeminent hazard science agency, we monitor everything from earthquakes to volcanoes, from landslides to flooding, and so much more. Our science is used by emergency responders and policymakers to support public safety, security, and economic well-being.
Community Outreach and Engagement
It is critically important that Indigenous peoples, rural communities, and Alaska co-management councils are kept informed of USGS research activities and findings. Involvement of and collaboration with these stakeholders provides valuable perspectives. This page offers information on how USGS communicates and seeks out important perspectives from stakeholders.

POV Polar Bear Collar Cam B-roll 2019, 2021, and 2022
This is B-roll video of POV Polar Bear Collar Cam B-roll 2019, 2021, and 2022. First slide after large black USGS logo: Polar bears equipped with GPS-enabled video camera collars that show the bear’s point-of-view. This video was collected as part of a study measuring the energy expenditure, behavior, movement, and body composition changes of polar bears on land in Wapusk National Park Canada,…
Rusting Rivers b-roll - Kugororuk River
This is B-roll video of the Kugororuk River in Noatak National Park and Preserve, Alaska from July 17, 2023.This video shows the Kugororuk River in Noatak National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Outflow of orange water from a tributary enters from an unnamed watershed creating turbulent water at the confluence with the mainstem of the Kugororuk River. The river shows orange water on left side and…
Drones for Science: Walrus Carcass Survey
This is B-roll video collected during the fall of 2024 on the Alaskan shores of the Chukchi Sea.USGS uses small uncrewed aerial systems, also known as drones for science, to survey walrus herds and carcasses on remote Alaskan beaches. If these large herds are disturbed by any number of factors, such as bears or low flying aircraft, the herd may rush in a panic to the safety of the sea. In that…
