The College of Agriculture & Natural Resources' (CANR) Outstanding Young Alumni Award honors individuals who have distinguished themselves by obtaining a high level of professional accomplishment and who possess high standards of integrity and character to positively reflect and enhance the prestige of the CANR within 10 years of graduation.
Abigail Lynch (pictured) is the lead aquatic scientist for the National Climate Adaptation Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). She has made significant contributions to understanding the biology of both freshwater and marine fishes and their management. She currently runs a research program concentrating on global change impacts to inland fish and fisheries. She has been involved in the development and publication of two books related to fisheries ecology and governance.
She has served as an adjunct MSU faculty member, chaired the USGS-MSU Science to Action Fellowship Committee, co-authored 12 peer-reviewed journal articles, given nine guest lectures and mentored over a dozen students including high school, undergraduate, graduate and postdoctorate students.
A natural leader, Dr. Lynch is the current president of the American Fisheries Society – International Fisheries Section. Additionally, she serves on an international steering committee in the Food and Agriculture Organization at the United Nations and organizes multiple symposia for the upcoming World Fisheries Conference in 2020. She has also provided leadership of the Infish network (Infish.org), a voluntary consortium of individuals focused on inland fish and fisheries around the world, which develops and conducts research projects to further the understanding of inland fish.
