Drought Watch or Warning Removed from 20 Pennsylvania Counties, Drought Watch Remains in 3 Counties

USGS groundwater and surface water monitoring data contributed to the January 7, 2021 removal of drought watch or warning declarations for 20 counties by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP). 

On January 7, 2021, PaDEP removed drought watch or warning in 20 counties and maintained drought watch status for 3 counties.

USGS data on streamflow and groundwater levels, National Weather Service data on precipitation, and Climate Prediction Center calculations of the Palmer Drought Severity Index (for soil moisture dryness) are used as indicators that help determine drought status. The trends in the USGS-provided information can be explored via our Web App.
