Science Night at Fishing Creek Elementary School
Local Outreach
USGS helps the communities where we live and work understand their water resources
USGS staff participated in Science Night at Fishing Creek Elementary School, where students learned about the native macroinvertebrate* population in nearby Yellow Breeches Creek.
The USGS Pennsylvania Water Science Center participated in Fishing Creek Elementary's Science Night on March 12, 2020, in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania. Students and parents learned about biological diversity and how it relates to water quality. Pictured are USGS employees Cameron Ensor and Jeff Chaplin, who prepared a display of macroinvertebrates* that were collected by Heather Eggleston. Instruments used by USGS to measure streamflow were also on display.
*Macroinvertebrates are animals that lack a spine and are large enough to be seen with the naked eye. Examples of freshwater macroinvertebrates include water insects, crayfish, snails, clams and worms.
