Alaska Science Center’s Commitment to “Gold Standard Science” for Data Products
The mission of the Alaska Science Center is to provide objective and timely data, information, and research findings about the earth and its flora and fauna to Federal, State, and local resource managers and the public to support sound decisions regarding natural resources, natural hazards, and ecosystems in Alaska and circumpolar regions. We are committed to ensuring all Federally funded data collected by ASC scientists are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR).
All USGS scientific products, including but not limited to data and software, are published following Fundamental Science Practices guidelines. Information products go through a rigorous review and approval process prior to publication, ensuring that USGS produced science meets the highest standards for reproducibility, transparency, and accuracy.
The USGS provides unrestricted public access to all digitally formatted scientific data resulting from unclassified research supported through full or partial federal funding. Data products are published in open (free), machine-readable formats and always include peer reviewed metadata that enable the public to find, understand, and reuse data products.
Data Publication Process
- Data quality assurance and quality control: Alaska Science Center scientists collect, process, and review data to ensure accuracy, reliability, and validity.
- Metadata: A metadata record describing the data collection methods and detailing the data components is prepared following FDGC metadata standards.
- Data Package Review: The data package including all data, metadata, and supplemental materials is reviewed by trained data management staff, peer reviewers, and management-level staff.
- Publication: Each data product is assigned a globally unique and persistent Digital Object Identifier (DOI) that allows for reliable access. Data are published and available for free download on the USGS ScienceBase repository.
- Perpetuity: Copies of all data packages are cataloged and archived at the Alaska Science Center.
