Genetic Data Used to Develop a Genotyping-in-Thousands by Sequencing (GT-seq) Panel for Identifying Individuals and Estimating Relatedness in Alaska Black Bears (Ursus americanus)

This data package includes genotype data for two independent sets of American black bear (Ursus americanus) samples. The first set of samples was collected from 85 adult bears harvested by permitted hunters in southcentral Alaska from 1994-2019; we hereafter refer to these as "hunter-harvested" samples. These hunter-harvested samples were genotyped with restriction site-associated...

GPS Tracking Data for Caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) from the Denali Herd, Alaska, 2010-2018

GPS collar location data were collected as part of a long-term study on caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) in the Denali herd of Alaska. Collars were deployed on adult (greater than or equal to 2 years) female caribou from 2010-2013, and then refurbished and redeployed on adult (greater than or equal to 4 years) male caribou from 2014-2018. The collars were manufactured by Telonics (TGW...

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) Genetic Data from the Chukchi Sea

This data set provides polar bear (Ursus maritimus) microsatellite genotypes derived from 21 loci (CPH9, CXX20, CXX110, CXX173, G1A, G10B, G10C, G1D, G10H, G10J, G10L, G10M, G10P, G10U, G10X, Mu26, Mu50, Mu51, Mu59, MSUT-2, REN145P07). Blood serum and hair samples for microsatellite genetic analysis were collected from polar bears from the Chukchi Sea between 1986 and 2019. Serum samples...

Walrus Haulout Audio Recordings Near Point Lay 2024

This dataset consists of a complete set of audio recordings collected near a large walrus haulout at Point Lay, Alaska, during September of 2024. The recordings were collected using the Song Meter Mini 2 (Wildlife Acoustics, Inc., Maynard, MA) at two sites, one within 150 m of a large walrus herd resting on shore and one placed more than 4 km to the south of the herd directly under the...

Bureau of Land Management Data on Breeding Ecology and Behavioral Responses of Loons to Oilfield Development Activities in the Fish Creek Watershed, National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska, 2016 and 2017

These data consist of the behavioral responses of Pacific and Yellow-billed Loons to helicopter overflights and ground-based human activity in disturbed vs. undisturbed areas, as well as nest success in the summers of 2016 and 2017 at two field camps in the Fish Creek watershed, NPR-A.

Heat Shock Protein 70 Abundance in Pacific Salmon

This data release contains one table with heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) abundance measurements of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) muscle samples, collected from fish occupying freshwater in various Alaskan watersheds. Water temperatures associated with a sampled fish are also included in the dataset, when available.

Select Mineral Abundancy Data from Alaska Placer and Pan Concentrate Samples Reanalyzed from 2020-2023

Samples from the Alaska Placer Concentrate Collection (APCC) were retrieved from the USGS National Geochemical Sample Archives and submitted for mineralogical analysis at the Colorado School of Mines. The APPC contains samples from placer mining operations throughout Alaska. The original collection contained approximately 5,000 samples that were collected by U.S. Geological Survey...

In Situ Fluorometric Measurements of Cyanobacteria, Green Algae, and Diatoms in Biofilms from Northwest Alaskan Rivers During Summer and Fall 2016-2019

This dataset contains measurements of in situ benthic biofilms from rivers of northwest Alaska during summer and fall 2016-2019. Measurements were made using a Benthotorch (bbe Moldaenke, Kiel, Germany) hand-held fluorometer, which distinguishes taxa (cyanobacteria, green algae, diatoms) and provides estimates of standing biomass.

Age Data for River Terraces on the Marsh Creek Anticline (Arctic Alaska, USA) Collected 2023-2025

These data are in three tables with age data for river terraces on the Marsh Creek anticline, from samples collected at sites along Marsh Creek and the Katakturuk River in Arctic Alaska. The tables include: (1) Carbon-14 ages, (2) Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) age, and (3) Cosmogenic Beryllium-10 concentrations.

Capture Data from Molting Steller's Eiders (Polysticta stelleri) at Izembek and Nelson Lagoons, Alaska

These data are in one table and contain information on the location, age, sex, and measurements (mass, ninth primary, culmen, and total tarsus) of Steller's Eiders during the flightless molt period. Captures took place at Izembek and Nelson Lagoons on the north side of the Alaska Peninsula.

GPS Tracking Data for the Nelchina Herd Caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti), Alaska, 1999-2002

These data were part of a tracking study of adult female caribou from the Nelchina Herd in Alaska. The dataset is comprised of two comma separated values (.csv) files. Data includes: 1) processed (i.e., erroneous locations removed) GPS locations for caribou, received once per 7 hours (October 1999 to October 2002), and 2) spatial, temporal, and biological attributes of the female caribou...

Walrus Haulout Outlines Apparent from Aerial Survey Images Collected Near Point Lay Alaska, September 2024

This dataset provides walrus haulout group outlines in a shapefile format. These data are based on visual interpretation of imagery from aerial surveys by a small uncrewed aerial system (sUAS) operated by the U.S. Geological Survey Alaska Science Center, over large groups of walruses resting onshore near Point Lay, Alaska during September of 2024.
