USGS Data in K-12 Education: Inspiring Future Scientists Active
Co-producing adaptable applications and trainings using USGS data to enhance data literacy in K-12 education.
Understanding data is essential to scientific literacy. Datasets produced by the USGS hold immense value for the scientific community and vast potential for the often-overlooked community of K-12 formal and informal education. We propose to enhance the reach of USGS data and science into the valuable community of K-12 students, educators, and their families. We will 1) create reproducible code-based templates for interactive lessons; 2) build standards-aligned activities using the templates with USGS data, contributing to a library of educational resources; 3) host an in-person workshop that supports teacher development and knowledge exchange; and 4) share our process and findings. We will follow a co-production model with educators, scientists, communicators, and data managers. This project will amplify the impacts of USGS investments in data by leveraging existing data, improving access to science, and providing opportunities to scale-up product development, to build capacity for open science and data literacy.
