Why are PFAS Found in Aquatic Environments Near Cape Cod?
Cape Cod is home to popular beaches and tourist destinations, but it is also home to the Joint Base Cape Cod military base. According to USGS Research Fish Biologist Heather Walsh, a co-author on the study, PFAS contamination has been known to originate from military bases, which use PFAS compounds during drills such as fire extinguishment.
Walsh’s former supervisor had conducted studies that found PFAS around the base. However, the destination of these PFAS and the organisms they were impacting was still unknown before Walsh’s study.
