Annual National Land Cover Database (NLCD) has a variety of options for users to download data from including EarthExplorer, web-based visualization tools, USGS ScienceBase, AWS Cloud, and Mosaic Download sites. Follow the links below to explore which platform works best for your needs.

Annual National Land Cover Database Collection 1.0 Science Products

The Annual NLCD conterminous United States (CONUS) product release contains six annual science products that cover the period between 1985-2023. Data products are available for download on EarthExplorer, the MRLC Web Viewer, the MRLC Mosaic Download website, ScienceBase, as Annual NLCD web services, and through USGS AWS S3 (Oregon us-west-2 region).

Annual NLCD Science Products Page

The six annual NLCD science products are available to download as conterminous United States (CONUS) mosaics from 1985-2023 through various data distribution methods. Below are more details on each of the data access methods listed above. 

MRLC Viewer 

The MRLC Viewer is a web-based visualization tool enables users to view and download Annual NLCD products, metadata, and animated graphics for a specified area.

The Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium has several different ways to access data, including a web-visualization tool. Users have the ability of several different download methods on the viewer: drawing a rectangle, drawing a polygon, entering GeoJSON information, and uploading a shapefile. After selecting your region of interest, select which Annual NLCD science products and years you would like to download and then enter your email. You will receive an email shortly with download instruction.

Download Tool

The MRLC Viewer Data Download Tool allows four different methods of downloading data: drawing a rectangle, drawing a polygon, uploading GeoJSON encoding, and uploading a singlepart feature only shapefile.                

EarthExplorer

Users have the option of downloading Annual NLCD indexed based on the Landsat Analysis Ready Data tiling scheme. The Annual NLCD Collection 1.0 Science Products can be found under the Land Cover category, listed as Annual NLCD Collection 1.0.

Annual NLCD MRLC Direct Download

Annual NLCD Collection 1.0 science products are available to download as conterminous United States (CONUS) from 1985-2023. Annual NLCD science products are available on the MRLC direct download site.

The Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) consortium hosts land cover and land condition data from various sources, including Annual NLCD. Annual NLCD science products are found under the projects tab, and user have the ability to download Annual NLCD CONUS mosaics from 1985-2023.

Annual NLCD Web Map Service

Annual NLCD land use and land cover science products are available using the Annual NLCD Web Map Service (WMS) endpoint. Instructions for accessing the WMS endpoint are linked here: https://www.mrlc.gov/data-services-page

AWS Cloud Access

Annual NLCD data will be available via a requester pays USGS AWS S3 (Oregon us-west-2 region). Annual NLCD follows a nested directory structure as show below:

            s3://usgs-landcover/annual-nlcd/c1/v0/[region[cu-ak-hi]]/tile/h{xx}v{yy}/ 

            s3://usgs-landcover/annual-nlcd/c1/v0/[region[cu-ak-hi]]/mosaic/

ScienceBase

ScienceBase contains Annual NLCD Science Products and Reference and Validation data available here https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/655ceb8ad34ee4b6e05cc51a.

EVA Tool

The Enhanced Visualization and Analysis (EVA) tool provides users with Annual NLCD science products at the county level between two different dates for easy and quick land cover change analysis.

 The Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium provides users with the EVA tool, which allows users to interact with Annual NLCD science products at the county level between two different dates. The EVA tool creates landcover analysis and the user has the ability to generate a more detailed report.
