USGS researchers and collaborators organize two-day webinar series on bat acoustic data analyses for North American Native nations
In collaboration with the Native American Fish and Wildlife Society (NAFWS) and Mr. Roger Rodriguez of Oregon State University (OSU), Dr. Ernest Valdez of the USGS Fort Collins Science Center co-organized and provided a free, two-day (30-31 October 2024) webinar series on bat acoustic data analyses for Native nations of eastern and western North America.
During these webinars, attendees learned about data management and processing, along with general species identifications using various acoustic analyses software, with main instruction by Mr. Rodriguez.
These webinars were attended by 88 participants belonging to over 30 nations and affiliated agencies from North America, including: Aleut, Bay Mills Indian Community, Catawba Nation, Cherokee Nation, Choctaw Nation, Coeur d'Alene Tribe, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Confederated Salish Kootenai Tribes, Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, Coquille Indian Tribe, Creek/Muscogee Nation, Dine/Navajo Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Hopi, Iñupiaq/Chinook, Kern River Tubatulabal Paiute, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Lummi Nation, Meskwaki Nation, Innu-Nitassinan, Penobscot Nation, Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, Sauk-Suiattle, Sault Ste Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, Southern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone, Tohono O'odham Nation, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, Yakama Nation, and Yaqui Nation.
This webinar series is a byproduct of the regional tribal workshops that were held during 2018, 2022, and 2023, all of which were led and co-organized by Dr. Valdez, while collaborating with Mr. Rodriguez of OSU, NAFWS, NPS, USDA-APHIS, BIA and other members of USGS. A regional workshop is being planned for the eastern half of the United States in 2025.
